Founded 20 years ago in 1999, McCownGordon Construction is responsible for the development, planning and building of many construction projects across the country. The 100% employee-owned company focuses on its three core values of integrity, relationships, and performance.
McCownGordon partnered with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation more than a decade ago to establish the McCownGordon Charitable Foundation. Since then, its corporate giving program has evolved to offer several charitable components to employees, including a matching gifts program and paid time off to volunteer.
“It’s delightful for me to be part of such an outstanding company that truly cares about the community and is dedicated to giving back,” says Ken Anderson, Field Supervisor. “There are a lot of companies that talk about doing great things, but McCownGordon actually does them. Employees here treat each other like family, and I’m blessed to be a part of it.”
A group of employees makes up a team called MGC Cares, organizing several volunteer opportunities for employees. With dedicated time off to volunteer, employees can spend time serving their favorite nonprofits or volunteering with their colleagues in organized opportunities.
Additionally, McCownGordon recently rolled out a matching gift program for employees. The company matches employees’ contributions to their favorite charities, up to $250 annually, doubling the impact of each donation.
“The matching gift program allows me to financially contribute to a nonprofit of my choice,” says Jill Sherman, Office Manager. “McCownGordon then matches my contribution, helping me support programs of my choice. It’s clear the company cares about us as associates and also the causes we care about.”
Giving back is closely intertwined with McCownGordon’s core values and is deeply ingrained in company culture. The company focuses on supporting the communities where employees live and work and where current projects are underway. McCownGordon’s commitment to giving back is attractive to potential employees as well.
“Our corporate giving program is a big draw for candidates, especially with younger people like interns and recent graduates,” said Nancy Whitworth, Vice President of Strategic Services. “They’re always asking about community involvement and how we can support their passions. People want to feel like they’re coming to work for not just a respected company but a company that gives back to the community.”
The Community Foundation is proud to be McCownGordon’s charitable partner. If your company is interested in implementing or expanding a corporate giving program, contact Manager of Corporate Services LaVon Colhour at colhour@growyourgiving.org or 816.627.3400.
