Create a Charitable Legacy this Holiday Season

Create a Charitable Legacy this Holiday Season

As each year comes to a close, we often find ourselves run-down by the stress of last-minute holiday shopping and finishing up year-end projects at the office. Sometimes, we get so caught up that we forget to enjoy the spirit of the season, and the next thing we know, we’ve flipped the page in our calendar without enjoying what some call the “most wonderful time of the year.”

For many families, turning to family traditions allows them to relax and reflect on what’s truly important. Adding a charitable component to family traditions can make this time of year even more meaningful. Here are some ways to create a charitable legacy around the holidays.

Discuss Family Interests and Values:
While your family is gathered together to celebrate, consider having a conversation about each family member’s charitable interests and values to deepen your family’s bonds. Start by asking about memorable volunteer experiences or donations. Find out what everyone’s favorite cause or organization is. You could even develop a family giving mission statement.

Volunteer Together:
Start a new tradition by volunteering as a family. Giving your time benefits nonprofit organizations, and it is a great way to spend time with family and boost your mood.

Give Through a Donor-Advised Fund:
If you use a donor-advised fund for all of your charitable giving, you can track donations all in one place. Then, when it is time to pass your donor-advised fund to your next generation, they’ll have detailed records of your charitable legacy. Contact us at info@growyourgiving.org or 816.842.0944 to learn more about donor-advised funds.

From all of us at the Community Foundation, we hope you are enjoying your holidays, and we look forward to serving you and your family as you make the world a better place.
